First the whole Russia learned how they went crazy for each other - and then the whole world did. Teenage girls have matured, but they continue to shock the audience with their provocative songs and shoking videos. Well, here they are in front of you - t.AT.u. vocalists Yulia Volkova and Lena Katina. There are plenty of newsbreaks. Uncensored version of their scandalous video "Beliy Plaschik" will be released this month as well as fresh extravagant video "220" and the new album "Upravleniye Otbrosami" [later], t.A.T.u. were filmed for the movie "Finding t.A.T.u.", Yulia's second baby was born in December, the wedding of Yulia and Parvis is coming...
"Ay-yaaaa!", Lena's voice is louder than the noise of hairdryer. While our stylist is experimenting with Lena's gorgeous hair, I rush to ask Yulia about latest news in her family life.
So why did you give birth in Russia, many celebrities do it abroad now?
Yulia: I just wanted to be closer to my family: Mom, Dad, Parvis. And if you give birth in America, you should fly there two-three months before the event - you won't do it the last day, right?! - then you should live there a couple of months after so that the baby gets adapted. It's easier for me here: I've got my private doctor who supervised both my first and my second pregnancies. I don't think that doctors are worse here or do their job worse. I gave birth with Russia's main gynecologist. I had a VIP-room with a king-size bed. And my husband lived with me all four days I spent at the hospital.
Was he present when it all happened?
Yulia: Yes, he even filmed a video.
How did your second pregnancy differ from the first one?
Yulia: My husband was next to me and that's the main thing. It was a planned pregnancy. There'll be the wedding this summer. It's all set now, all real.
At this moment Parvis calls. Yulia's eyes immediately light up. "And I'm telling about our wedding here!" She tells him and turns to me laughing, "He's surprised, " Really?! We're having a wedding this summer?!"
"I want a beautiful wedding, - Yulia continues, - but only for family and close friends. I'm not going to invite 500 people and to rent some unreal museum as it's trendy now. Frankly, we want to marry not in Moscow: We'll book a charter plane for about a hundred people and fly to some island. A wedding should be only once. It's a very serious decision for me. Before it all happened I thought that I wasn't created for a family life, that I would party and have fun for a long time, but I met a person who changed my worldview to a big degree. And I think one should put on the wedding ring and not take off it after.
Is it true Parvis' parents insisted that you should make a circumcision to your son?
Yulia: It's all nonsense from tabloids. Circumcision is done not because a child is Moslem. Today every second newborn boy, if his parents have more or less modern views, has the circumcision done. First, for reasons of hygiene and second, for beauty. Circumcision was done the next day after Sam's (that's how the child was called - magazine note) birth. And it was an idea of me and Parvis, not his parents.
Did your husband attempted to persuade you to accept Islam?
Yulia: God is one for me and there's no difference which religion you belong. We don't discuss this topic right now. By the way, we don't want to just go to the office of civil registration and to stamp our passports, as they love to do in Russia. Where's the thrill, really? We don't need it like this. We want to have a wedding service. We'll leave for an island, we'll take a priest along, or it could be a mullah, and he gets us married. In the eyes of God.
Newspapers wrote that your husband wants to have four children. Are you ready?
Yulia: Yes! I want five. Now we already have three from two of us (including Paris's son of the first marriage - magazine note). I want two or three more. We'll make two-three-years pauses. Because after all there's career. However, pregnancy didn't interfere with my career.
And how did your daughter Vika react on your pregnancy?
Yulia: She said, "Mommy, you overeaten? You've got such a big belly!" Now she doesn't fully realize that it's her brother. She treats him like a toy. She calls him "lyalechka". She would approach him, look at him, touch him and then runs to play with some lego. She's just 3,5 years old!
How does Parvis look at your career? He's a man from the East, and t.A.T.u. is famous for being scandalous...
Yulia: He's perfectly fine. Work is outside the family. And then... I'm not acting in porno videos with bunch of men after all...
"Yulia is our mother-heroine!"
Lena approaches us almost unnoticed. She looks at her long hair in front of the mirror. "Oh, looks like I've got them almost waist-deep! It should leave them growing a little more!", sais Lena and joins our talk.
Could you tell us about the movie "Finding t.A.T.u." where you are involved?
Lena: The movie's based on a novel "t.A.T.u. Come Back" by quite known Alexei Mitrofanov. It was filmed by Russian-American team Roland Joffe is the director, well-known as well. This is the story about two our fans, two girls whose relationships you'll see on the background of t.A.T.u. music. The movie will be starring a young Hollywood actress Mischa Barton, quite a popular one in the West, but we have a lot of great Russian actors in the cast as well - Olesya Sudzilovskaya, Alexander Anatolyevich...
Yulia: Video, cinema, stage - it's all one thing. If you're an artist inside!
Lena: It's a first experience of being involved in a serious movie for both of us. Though it wasn't really hard - we played ourselves.
Why did [former] LDPR Party Deputy Alexei Mitrofanov write a book about you?
Lena: We know each other for a long time and I suspect that he's also our fan (laughs). Frankly speaking I'm not into this kind of literature. I like deeper books, classic stuff. Books you can read between the lines. But anyway it's interesting to look at yourself from the outside.
You're not teenagers anymore now. Yulia's got a family, two children...
Lena: Yeah, she's our mother-heroine!
But back then you were among the first to speak up about homosexual love...
Lena: We showed that there was such a fact. When they're growing, all teenagers begin searching for themselves... I think 90% of population tried it this way and that way before they made a decision. We sang about the things that were on teenage minds. About the things that were on our minds... And of course we sang about love in general. It's a beautiful feeling and it's great if one happens to experience it in this life.
Yulia told in many interviews that she experienced real love for the first time now, with Parvis. And have you ever had serious feelings towards a member of the opposite sex?
Lena: Sometimes it seems that this is it, it's here - and then it vanishes somewhere.... There're many various quotes about love, many novels are written, but not a single one answers what is it exactly. I think I know it, but maybe in five years I'll fall in love so crazily that all I had BEFORE will not be counted.
You have a boyfriend now, haven't you...
Lena: Yes, and you know... I lived with another guy for two years. He's a great person. He treated me the way nobody and never did! But I couldn't fall in love with him, so we separated. And now I date my former classmate. We know each other since we were in the second grade. We began to date only half a year ago even though some tender feeling always existed between us. I feel comfortable with this person, and I'm happy now! Recently we had a diner with candlelight. It may seem banal, but it's enjoyable. He gave me flowers and said he loved me for the first time.
So it's over with the lesbian thread in you creative work?
Lena: It was over with the second album... We do the things that are relevant for us at this stage of development. We sing about the things we're concerned with and about the questions people don't want to discuss. Take "Waste Management". That's how our new album will be named. By "waste" we mean all negative feelings we need to get rid of or to learn to manage them...
Yulia: For example meanness, spite, envy, greed...
How did you come up with this name?
Lena: It's an interesting story. We had a photo-shoot at the unusual disposal dump - a car cemetery. We walked around during a break and saw an incredible picture: A neat lawn of a plain shaven grass and a wall made out of concrete on it with white letters - Waste Management. We liked this dissonance so much that we decided to use it.
Lena, your English's brilliant judging by your foreign interviews. Where did you get it?
Lena: Well, not brilliant, but normal. It's from school. I studied in a special class and we had a great teacher. And practice, of course. We spend a lot of time abroad, and the language improves when you talk in it. When I came to America for the first time I could hardly talk, but I learned in some time. Now I started to learn Spanish.
"We are an exception"
By the way, returning to waste. It's considered that there's no real friendship in show business because of competition, envy and money... Would you agree?
Yulia: Actually yes. But we don't experience it because in Russia we‘re not close with people from this world. There're only duty smiles and "hi-bye", if we meet at some awards. It's a different thing abroad. It's a totally different situation there: people support each other, they are happy for you. And it's all sincere, because they're self-sufficient. They work hard and they sing live, by the way. Real stars! Not as ours.
Lena: Our friendship with Yulka is an exception. We don't just work together, we're also good friends in life. Maybe it's because we knew each other not from show-business life, but from children's band "Neposedi" when we were kids. Another exception is Yulka and Serezhka Lazarev. They're very good friends. I don't know about the others.
Who do you like among foreign artists? Maybe you're friends with any?
Yulia: I like Fergie from Black Eyed Peas a lot. She's a kindred spirit, we know each other. During her performance in Moscow she suddenly pulled me on the stage.
Lena: And I don't like all these parties. I feel uncomfortable there. I'm not a show business person. If it's not for Yul'ka, I would have already escaped. We're total antipodes. Like fire and ice.
But extremes are attracted to each other...
Lena: Probably. Sometimes she pushes me, sometimes I calm her down... Maybe that's why we're together since we're 12 years old and she's already a family for me. I know that if she's unhappy she won't call for a long time, she'll suffer alone, and then she'll call anyway. And value this very much. I also call her when I feel down.
Yulia: I like Lena's calmness the most, her inner privacy. If I'm naturally crazy and at the slightest provocation I could go, "Get lost everybody! I'll show you!", Lena, on the contrary, always advises me, "Let it all go and everything would come around".
It could be the reason Lena was the first to find out about your first pregnancy...
Yulia: Yes, I had doubts back then. But I had no thoughts about an abortion. I was just terrified. I was afraid to tell mom and dad, to give birth. Career was at the top... Moreover, there was no loving man behind. But it was the way it happened... I got pregnant. I didn't know what to do, and Lena really supported me. I have no regrets. I love my daughter Vika.
Lena: I'm against abortions in general. Actually our video "Beliy Plashik" touches this issue among others. I really want to have a baby myself. It's my dream and Yulia was the first to do it. My close friend will give birth soon and I'll become a godmother. I believe that no matters how hard it is, if you've made this choice and decided to have a baby, God will not leave you.
"Who is a shopaholic?!"
When you have an argument, who's the first to start making up?
Lena: It depends. Yulia's more emotional, of course. If she's furious - then just run for your lives! And if I want to say a word I need to raise my voice and to shout. But it's not a quarrel. It's a discussion in a work process. We don't quarrel at all.
Avraam Russo (Russian pop-singer) said in an interview that a tie defines a man. What does define a woman in your opinion?
Yulia: I think that eyes define both, a man or a woman. You see there immediately what person is in front of you.
Lena: And I think, if we talk about things, it's footwear. I don't know why.
Have you got lots of footwear?
Lena: Not much. Not as Yulia's collection! If we get together all her footwear, we can open a shoe mall! Here we have a shopaholic! She buys everything she likes! And I buy only what is necessary.
At this moment Yulia is making an appointment with a beauty saloon for a massage.
Yulia: I love to visit beauty saloons! I loves various massages, body wraps. I go there about three times a week. And if there's some spare time I immediately rush there. Besides these things help to restore faster after a childbirth and to loose weight.
Lena: Speaking of weight. Let's go for a pizza! I am starving! We need to eat before six, or I'll gain weight again! - Lena agitates everybody.
It looks like neither international fame nor the status of a wife and a mom don't affect an ineradicable childish spontaneity of "t.A.T.u.". Well... let's go grab pizza!
