t.A.T.u.: "Life is tension"
You're probably the only Russian band that holds leading places in western charts. Is there some difference for you to make a hit song here and there?

Lena Katina: It's actually not easy to make hit song in general. But what do you mean - "here and there"? Singles which got into charts in Russia and in the West differed just in language - take "Nas ne dogonyat" and "Not Gonna Get Us" for example, or "Ya soshla s uma" and "All The Things She Said". And some of the songs didn't differ even in language - "All About Us", "Friend or Foe". By the way, we released "Beliy Plashik" as s single in the Russian language, but it got in various videocharts in Europe and Eastern Europe. Such recognition is nice, of course.
Who can you name as your guru in music, whose creative work you could call flawless?
Yulia Volkova: We have no "ideals". And maybe that's why the things we do are original.
Lena Katina: Surely there're many you definitely respect, but speaking of ideals, ideals are something that you're moving to, I guess. And we're moving towards our own heights.
How can you describe your fans?
Yulia Volkova: Crazy. Free. Understanding.
Lena Katina: First of all they're ours - it speaks for itself.
Did you ever have stories about crazy fans that annoyed you?
Yulia Volkova: Of course we did. But it's a part of our life. We should accept it or we just shouldn't be artists.
Lena Katina: Yulia and me, we've got fans that sometimes come to us, right to where we live! We would hang out together, talk openly. Last time someone even came from Europe.
Do you have limits when it comes to "shock" issue? Or everything is possible on the stage?
Lena Katina: Each artist determines his limits himself. The main thing is to realize what do you do it for. If there's shock for the sake of shock, then who needs it? It's senseless.
Yulia Volkova: In "Beliy Plashik" video Lena's character executes my pregnant character. People may say t.A.T.u. can do everything to stay a shocking and scandalous band. But... there was a message at our forum a few days ago from some guy who showed the video "Beliy Plaschik" to his girl friend who 100% decided to make an abortion. And after a while he met her and she was...expecting a baby. Can you imagine this? I don't know the role of "Plaschik" in this story, but even if it's just 1% - it's just amazing.
After so many years of the successful work what can you say about Russian show-business? Some people routinely scare us with some "gay mafia"...
Lena Katina: I don't know anything about it. And as for show-business, it's not easy at all to keep your level and to spit at the so-called "format" (format = Russian term that describes the reality when certain media channels require certain types of content, usually without clear explanation what they actually want this content to be - blog.tatu.ru). But me and Volchitsa will stay true to ourselves.
Yulia Volkova: And we actually have no show-business, I think...
You started with lesbian girls story and now you're kind of straight girls, even the maternity affects you in a good way. And how should those young gays and lesbians feel who've believed you were one of them? It was a lie?
Yulia Volkova: I didn't quite get it, the maternity has nothing to do with being or not being gay. Gay couples can also raise children.
Lena Katina: We've got a blog at our homepage which is written by our team from the name of an invented character - some Insider. So in one of his last posts there was probably the most precise answer to this question. Yulia and me, we were never lesbians, but the hint and the image we got helped thousands people to open up and not be afraid to say "I love you" to a person despite of his or her sex. This is the power of art that showed that love has no boundaries.
By the way, many gays and lesbians in show-business are afraid to say it aloud and, what's even worse, are trying to prove in media that they're "not like that". Why do they do it, in your opinion?
Lena Katina: Because it's quite hard to be gay in Russia. You answered the question yourself - there's pressure all around. Family, friends, outside people, media...
Can an open gay become popular today?
Yulia Volkova: Yes, he or she can. Even in our country.
Did you change your attitude towards sexual minorities after your short participation in a Moscow Gay Pride?
Lena Katina: I'd say we changed our attitude towards "majorities".
Yulia Volkova: And not to the advantage of the latter. It's a pity our country can hardly perceive the idea that each one has the right to be whoever he or she wants.
The homosexual propaganda is being discussed in media. I'm gay and it's funny for me to read about it: Not a single gay man began to desire women after watching sex with a woman. What's propaganda of homosexuality for you?
Lena Katina: Yulia and me were accused of it many times. We ignored such "ludi-invalidi".
Yulia Volkova: Probably I didn't experienced it close enough, but I think there's too much aggression and violence in our society in general.
What can embarrass you?
Yulia Volkova: Embarrass? Right now - probably nothing.
Lena Katina: Honestly, I feel a little uncomfortable without Yulka at some parties. I feel I miss her. Yes, maybe it's an embarrassment.
What plans do you have for a couple of upcoming months?
Lena Katina: There'll be shows - in Russia, Egypt, Germany, Italy. And soon we'll have a premiere of our second single "220" at one major radio station and the video for the song will premiere a bit later.
Yulia Volkova: Besides, we're preparing two big releases at the same time. In the end of April - beginning of May we're releasing hyperion-plate "Beliy Plaschik" together with SOUZ (we invented this term "hyperion-plate" ourselves in honor of Hyperion treatment plant in Los Angeles ) and closer to June fans will finally get our new studio album - "Upravleniye Otbrosami".
Don't you ever have a wish to change something in your life? Aren't you bored with this routine - singles-videos-albums-tours- singles-videos-albums-tours?
Yulia Volkova: Listen, it's all vice versa, everything's changing in our life all the time. Except the fact we're the t.A.T.u. band for about 9 years.
Lena Katina: And, by the way, when you really think about it and scroll all the years and all the events in your head, then you understand there's no wish to change anything.
You probably can afford yourselves a lot. Are there still some unobtainable things for you?
Lena Katina: We can't afford to really relax.
Yulia Volkova: I think we don't actually need to, Len. Life is tension.
